How to Stop Google Maps from Starting Maps in Satellite View
When you open the Google Maps app on your Android phone, does the map automatically appear in satellite view? If yes, don’t worry! You are not alone. This can be quite frustrating, especially if you always use the traffic mode. In this article, I have shared how you can stop Google Maps from launching maps in satellite view.
Although the Google Maps app opens in the default map view by default, you can make Satellite view your default map style by changing the settings. If you set Satellite view as the default in your Google Maps app settings, the app will always open in Satellite view, no matter how many times you launch it.

If you want your Google Maps app to open with the default traffic map instead of Satellite or Terrain when launched, you’ll need to adjust the “Start Maps in Satellite View” settings. Before following the steps below, make sure you’re using the latest version of the Google Maps app.
To disable Satellite view by default on your Android phone:
- Open Google Maps App on Your Mobile Phone.
- Tap on Profile Icon at Top Right Corner.
- Tap on Settings.
- Now, Turn Off the ‘Start Maps in Satellite View’ Toggle.
That’s all! Now, when you open Google Maps on your phone, it will no longer default to Satellite View. However, you can still manually switch to Satellite View by going to ‘Map Type.’ Keep in mind that each time you close the app, you’ll need to select Satellite View again.

FAQs
Q 1. Why does my MyGoogle Maps always open in satellite view by default?
Answer – Google Maps remembers any changes you make to the settings. So, if you’ve enabled the “Start Maps in Satellite View” option, Google Maps will always open in Satellite View by default.
Q 2. Does turning off the default satellite view improve Google Maps performance?
Answer – Yes! Disabling the default satellite view in Google Maps can improve the app’s performance. The satellite view uses much more data than the terrain or traffic views. By turning it off, you can use Google Maps more effectively with a slow internet connection and also extend your phone’s battery life.
Q 3. Can I use Google Maps in “Terrain View” without enabling satellite mode?
Answer – Yes! You can get Terrain View without enabling Satellite mode.
- Open Google Maps App and Tap on Layers Icon.
